Ornette: Made in america
A salute for old times' sake and to celebrate Bubblan's free musical spirit
Dear fellow cinephiles, welcome back to our beloved underground film club!
We are very happy to invite you to a special evening where we are going to inaugurate, although “i smyg” as they say in Swedish, the upcoming fall season of Bubblan’s offer of great events.
Even though the No Home Movies film club is no longer part of KUF’s repertoire, the universe has aligned itself favourably next week and allowed us to propose to you a new, and unique screening!
It’s been a while, and we have surely missed our time together sharing international art-house cinema that would otherwise be very hard to see and find. We cherish all those evenings very much and we hope that we contributed somehow to spreading our love for film. We are glad to be together once again for this special occasion and share Bubblan’s film and dance floor!
PRACTICAL INFORMATION:
The screening will take place on Thursday the 22nd of August at Bubblan, Fiskhamnsgatan 41B Kajskjul 46, Göteborg. The screening will start at 9 pm (21:00) and the venue will open at 8 pm (20:00). The film is 77 minutes long.
No entrance fee!
We this pick we wanted two things: to capture the essence of our cinematic underground and avant-gardist mission and to celebrate the spirit of Bubblan’s musical freedom.
This documentary looks at the music of the icon Ornette Coleman and it does so without any intention of clarity, resolution or pedagogy. It merges the cinematic with the music and tries to bring to the fore the two art forms’ experimental qualities. The subject matter and the filmmaker behind it are a perfect match: the avant-garde director Shirley Clarke is well known for her ability to create kinetic images of jazzian energy. To have a better understanding of the director’s career I strongly recomend this profile on the BFI.
At the end of it, you might feel like you learned absolutely nothing about the artist, but at the same time, the sheer visual artistry, together with the raw and free musical energy, may allow you to reach a more ecstatic state of experience and, thus, getting to know and feel more than any didactic explanation could ever achieve.
A true and profound example of what music films can do!
We leave you with a more in-depth New York Times article to prepare for the event and we look forward to seeing you once again at No Home Movies!
